One way or another, everything that you order will feature Pompompurin. The menu is not huge, but everything that they make is really cute, from the savoury dishes to the desserts and the drinks. (Actually, I kind of knew even before I was given a menu, as I’d looked up the menu on the Pompompurin Cafe website beforehand.) This is always a good idea and can help to speed up the process once you get inside, as by then you should have already chosen what you want to eat. We were handed a menu while we waited in the queue.

(We took care to ensure that we didn’t annoy any of the other customers, of course.)Ī lot of themed cafes and restaurants in Japan do not allow photos, so it’s always a big plus when we find a restaurant that allows this. One of the great things about the Pompompurin Cafe is that they’re happy for guests to take photos. Plenty of effort has gone into making the Pompompurin Cafe look great, so there are lots of things to photograph if, like me, you’re so inclined. In the centre of the restaurant is a large Pompompurin and his best friend, Muffin. Most of the customers were teenaged girls, young women, a couple of families and three girls who brought guys with them. Super kawaii, even! Like many themed cafes, you can expect to find lots of tiny tables seated within close proximity of one another. Something that my partner noticed was that when we visited, there were only three guys in the whole restaurant, himself included. The Pompompurin Cafe is an official Sanrio Cafe, and it’s really cute. Creme caramel pudding is actually Pompompurin’s favourite food, and yes, you can order it at the Pompompurin Cafe. Unlike Hello Kitty who has turned out to be a girl, not a cat (and I’m still dubious about this), Pompompurin is apparently definitely a dog – even though ‘purin’ is Japanese for creme caramel pudding. Pompompurin (ポムポムプリン – also written PomPomPurin or Pom Pom Purin) is a dog – a golden retriever to be exact – who wears a brown beret. No Japanese district filled with youth culture and kawaii can be complete without Sanrio, and what better suburb for one of Sanrio’s cutest characters than Pompompurin?

You might have heard of the amazing Kawaii Monster Cafe – it’s also located in Harajuku. Harajuku (原宿), located within Tokyo, is one of Japan’s most well-known suburbs. It’s famous for its youth culture, over-the-top teen fashion and its kawaii (cute) shops and cafes.

Sourced from the official Japanese Sanrio website.Japan is the home of kawaii, themed cafes and Sanrio. One of Sanrio’s cutest characters, Pompompurin has a cafe in the heart of Harajuku, one of the most kawaii suburbs in Tokyo. Pompompurin is a beige golden retriever with a brown beret. Pompompurin is talented in napping and doing 'purin aerobics'. (This is probably because he likes caramel puddings, and it is named after the popular Japanese (and American) pudding, often with caramel at the bottom.) Purin, his shorter name, is actually Japanese pudding (also American pudding), Purin. His name translated in Chinese (布丁狗) means pudding dog. (Purin is named after Japanese pudding.) He dreams of growing even bigger. He also loves milk, his mother's cream caramel pudding, and nothing soft. He loves the phrase "Let's go out!" but hates the phrase "Stay". He has a laid-back personality and can make friends with anyone. He lives near the front door of a girl's house in a special 'Purin size' basket. Pompompurin's birthday is April 16th ("on a rainy day").
